Community Clean-Up Week
Posted Date:

The Community Clean-Up Week is scheduled for April 23-27, 2018.

The weather is warming, and summer is coming.  Now is the time to begin sprucing up our town and the City Commission is asking for your help during our Community Clean-Up week April 23-27, 2018!  The timing couldn't be better.  Earth Day is April 22nd, Arbor Day is April 27th, and the Throttle Jockey's Annual Car Show and Drags is April 28th.  Perfect time to chip in and clean-up!

In years past, the city-wide clean-up has sometimes been little more than an opportunity to set things at the curb, so the city workers could haul it off.  This year though, we are going to do things a lot different.  This is a Community Clean-Up driven by community.

Our town is blessed with an abundance of non-profit volunteer organizations and a very active and contributing school system.  We have a wealth of civic and community minded people of all ages that want to contribute and help make Herington a better place to live.  We each see things during our normal day that could be cleaner or nicer, but we all have different priorities as to what should be done first and how it should be done.

It is with those thoughts in mind that the concept for the Community Clean-Up week was developed.  "Make a difference where you stand".  Pick something important to you or to your group and do something about it.  If it's not your property, be sure to get permission from the owner of the property though.

It's easy to participate.  Your group selects something important to the members of the group, outline the objective you plan to achieve, and select the day or days your group will work toward your objective.  If your group is willing, we would love it if you would let one of the Commissioners know what your group plans to tackle so we can deconflict with other groups to maximize the scope of projects.  But if you prefer to keep it a secret, that's okay as well, just make sure to get permission from the property owners.

1. Talk to your group

2. Pick something important to your group

3. Do something about it

4. If there is something the commission can do to help, let us know

5. Stand back and enjoy the difference your group made in your community

Maybe it's getting one of the parks ready for summer, selecting a section of road or lake shore to remove trash, cleaning the yard around a vacant property, or maybe just picking a street and going door to door to see what your group can do to make a difference in a neighborhood.  Letting us know will help us ensure your group gets recognized for the work performed but it is not a requirement.  As we get closer to the Community Clean-Up, there will be a facebook event page, and flyers going up around town as we promote participation.  During the Clean-Up week each group and organization is invited to please post pictures of the difference they are making.  Wouldn't it be great to see Facebook flooded with pictures of people making a positive difference!

Will your group or organization please consider joining us April 23-27, 2018 for the Community Clean-Up week?  If those dates don't work for your group, then pick another date that does.  We just want to maximize participation!

Remember, if there is something your group would like city assistance with, please get with one of your commissioners so we can see what we can do to help make it happen.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
